Well located in central Tokyo, Sophia University was founded by the Jesuits in 1913. Since then, it has been a pioneer in international education in Japan, attracting students from all over the world. In 1949 Sophia established the first program in Japan taught entirely in English, and it continues to lead the Japanese academic world in offering degree programs bursting with diversity. Programs at the undergraduate level are comprised of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Faculty of Science and Technology (Green Science/Green Engineering) and the Sophia Program for Sustainable Futures (SPSF), which includes the departments of Journalism, Education, Sociology, Economics, Management, and Global Studies. At the graduate level, the university offers programs in Global Studies, Global Environmental Studies, Science and Technology, Linguistics (TESOL), Education, and International Cooperation Studies. Applications to most English-taught programs (except to some graduate programs) are via document screening only, so students do not need to come to Japan for written examinations or interviews. When it comes to helping students, Sophia offers a variety of scholarships (all grants, no loans), including support of partial/full tuition. Applications to such Sophia scholarships do not require the student to come to Japan for the procedures.

The university’s Career Center is open to all students throughout the year, with counseling available in both Japanese and English.
