  Ochanomizu University was established in 1875 as Tokyo Women’s Normal School, an institution specializing in the development of female teachers.
Since its founding, Ochanomizu University has educated many distinguished researchers and educators, including Tetsu Yasui, the president of Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Kono Yasui, the first Japanese woman to earn a doctorate in science, and Toshiko Yuasa, the internationally renowned physicist.

Ochanomizu University is located in the center of Tokyo, yet rich in nature, where students may enjoy the seasonal beauty.
The campus is only about 15 minutes away from Tokyo station, and 10 minutes away from Ikebukuro station by train. The students’ dormitory is also located on campus, which provides fuller experience as a member of the university.

Our university accommodates all levels of education facilities from a nursery to a graduate school on the same campus.
We have four undergraduate faculties, Letters and Education, Science, Human Life and Environmental Science, and Transdisciplinary Engineering, which was newly launched in April 2024.
For graduate school, we have six courses both for the master’s degree and the doctoral degree.

The most prominent feature of our educational program is the adoption of highly advanced curricula taught in small class units. Our faculty members are able to offer personalized support to students, discovering each student’s interest in learning, and offering guidance in respect of each student’s unique strength.
In the specialized education curriculum in particular, our students will gain general knowledge, professional/specialized knowledge, academic knowledge and practical knowledge according to each student’s goals and interests, through small-sized seminars, labs and practical training sessions.

As for our international relations, Ochanomizu University has a close relationship with Thailand ever since the acceptance of the four students from Siam in 1903 as our very first international students. Today, 220 international students are studying at Ochanomizu University, and we have 94 partner universities from all over the world.

In 2025, we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the university. For our preparation for this special year, we are staying on track with our aim to be a university that responds to the needs and expectations of the society.
