Outline
Nara National Institute of Higher Education and Research was established in 2022 as the governing body of Nara Women's University and Nara University of Education.
Nara Women's University is an institution of higher education for women, and Nara University of Education is a teacher training institution. Both were established over 100 years ago in Nara, the ancient capital of Japan, and have a long tradition. Both universities offer scholarships and tuition exemptions for international students, as well as inexpensive student dormitories near the campuses.
Nara Women's University is located about a 5-minute walk from the nearest Kintetsu Nara Station, and Nara University of Education is also within walking distance from Kintetsu Nara Station, making it convenient for commuting and living. A short walk from the campus, there are tourist attractions such as Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, which are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites "Ancient Capital of Nara", and Nara Park where many deer live, allowing students to actually experience and learn about history and culture. On the other hand, access to Osaka and Kyoto is also convenient, taking only a little over 30 minutes by train.
Nara Women's University is one of only two national women's universities in Japan, and has four faculties: Letters, Science, Human Life and Environment, and Engineering, as well as the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, with approximately 2,700 students and 200 faculty members. As a small university, it is able to provide careful and detailed guidance and support to each student, and some graduate school science courses are offered in English, depending on the advisor. More than half of the international graduates go on to higher education or find employment in Japan.
Nara University of Education has a Teacher Training Program for School Teachers, a Master's Program in the Graduate School of Education, and a Professional Degree Program in the Graduate School of Education (Graduate School of Teacher Education), with approximately 1,200 students and 100 faculty members. The curriculum covers a wide range of ESD issues, including the environment, culture, peace, and human rights. The department of Traditional Culture Education / International Education in Master Program unique to our university provides the courses related to the sustainable development and education of traditional culture, and international education, and aims to develop human resources who can contribute to the realization of a sustainable and multiculturally convivial society.
