International University of Health and Welfare

 Outline

International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) opened in 1995 as Japan's first comprehensive health science university. It consists of 11 schools and 27 departments on five campuses across Japan. Currently approximately 10,000 students are enrolled.
Available undergraduate Schools and Departments include School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Health Sciences (Departments of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Orthoptics and Visual Sciences, Medical Technology and Sciences, Radiological Sciences), and School of Psychology and Healthcare Management. We also have master’s and doctoral programs in Medicine, Public Health, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Health and Welfare Sciences.
IUHW School of Medicine opened in 2017 near Narita International Airport, 38 years after the government ban on the establishment of new medical schools in Japan. Our medical school is quite unique and it distinguished itself from other 81 medical schools in Japan by teaching medicine in English for the first time in Japan, welcoming international students (one in seven students are international students, some on IUHW full scholarship) and offering rich English and Japanese language programs, and providing a curriculum that encourages students to become active learners which is a necessary attitude for life-long learning. We also provide hands-on clinical education from freshman year by taking advantage of one of the largest simulation centers (5300m2) in the world we have on campus.
A national licensure examination passing rate for each department is among the highest in the country. The inaugural class of School of Medicine who graduated in March 2023 also achieved an impressive 99.2% passing rate for the National Examination for Medical Practitioners. Of note, 15 international students who took this Japanese medical license exam in Japanese all passed despite the fact that most of these students did not speak Japanese when arriving in Japan 3~5 months prior to enrolling in our School of Medicine.
Another feature of IUHW is that we provide international education. We have signed partnership agreements with 47 institutions in 24 countries and regions (as of April 2024). Many students study abroad while enrolled at our school. Not only School of Medicine, but all IUHW Schools and Departments welcome international students. Since our School of Medicine teaches medicine in English for the first 2~3 years, no Japanese language proficiency is required to apply. However, for other Schools and Departments, teaching is done in Japanese and Japanese language proficiency is required to enter.
